Phreaking. Telephones. Telephoney. Now i dont know if i could give you a r33t deffition of those three terms, or even an accurate one for that matter. So I will will answer 2 of the 3. Okay lets start with the one I know. Telephone. Um... This is uhh... Hm damn. Okay ok, it is that thing that you use when um... When like you do that thing that uh. Dumbass bitches. If you dont know then go back to watching all those quality shows on your local FOX affiliate, like when termites kill babies, and people's inards are picked out by ghosts secrets unlocked. As for phreaking it is best described for me as hacking, using the bell system as your medium. But if we look at the definition of hacking it is the quest to learn how things work and make them do stuff they weren't originally supposed to do. So i guess phreaking, is hacking with telephones and bell systems. So with this said here is the rest of our mother fucking pimp ass zine. If you are new to phreaking you should definately read this so you can somewhat understand things you might not.
AT&T - American Telephone & Telegraph Company
MCI - Mircowave Communications Inc.
DTMF - Dual-Tone Multifrequency, used today in modern phones as Touch Tone.
Ring & Tip - Now reffer to the red and green wires on a telephone line. Before the bell systems converted to copmuterized switching they had operators do all the switching manually with patch cords, where the the "ring" and "tip" refferd to the ends of the patch cord.
Terminal Block - The terminal bock is where the phone company's lines stop and "yours" begin. This is usually a grey box on the outside wall of a house, in a garage or in a basement of a house/building. Terminal blocks are also refferd to as: Demarcation Point Arangement (DPA), Network Interface (NI), or Standard Network Interface (SNI).
Signal Multiplexing - Sending multiple signals over a single wire or line. (How our phone system works today)
SPST - Single Pole, Single Throw; usually reffering to a SPST switch used to create and effect similar to pulse dialing.
Exchange - And exchange is all of the telephones connected to a central office. Exchanges are represented by the prefix on a standard 7 digit telephone number. A central office can handle many exchanges that represent the same calling area: IE 624,625,622,620 are on the same CO.

====Basics on DTMF and how it FUCKING WERX====

DTMF works by usesing combinations of two enharmonicon tone frequencies. Enharmonic in this case means the two frequencies are not an exact whole-number multiple of eachother. IE: 500Hz & 750Hz = harmonics (2x250=500, 3x250=750) but 333Hz & 293Hz are enharmonics. The reason that a dual-tone is used instead of a single tone is for reliability. So that the system does not confuse background noises and such as dialing tones. Most DTMF or "Touch Tone" dialing uses a standard 3x4 keypad. Although other keypads are used too, 3x4 is the commercial standard. By sperating it into a basic 3x4 matrix using columns and rows and assigning frequencies to them like so:

we can illistrate how this is setup. As you smart kidz might have guessed, this is where the name comes from. Dual-Tone because two tones are mixed to create each sound when a key is pressed, and Mulitfrequencey because the tones are created by multiple tones on differnet frequencies. Some keypads use a 4x4 matrix, where the fourth column is designated as [A], [B], [C], [D]. This fourth column frequency is 1633Hz.

(1)The telephone was invented simaltainiously in 1876 by by inventors, Alexander Gram Bell and some dude with the lastname of "Grey". Bell is usually credited with the invetion b/c he got the US patent first on march 7, 1876.
(2)Originally the telephone was invented to send multiple Morse code signals over a single wire.
(3)Telephones used to use a 4 pronged jack for a non perminant installation until AT&T developed the modular jack which is todays standard.
(4)A typical central office can handle up to 10,000 independent telephone numbers.
(5)In a standard 7 digit telephone number (555-1212), the first three digits are the exchange, and the last four identify the line being called.
(6)DTMF Dialing was developed in the 1960's but wasn't popularized until the mid 1970's.
(7)Although having operators manually switch calls was not efficent, it wasn't until 1918, 27 years after the invention of the Strowger switch (the first automated switching system) that it was adopted by the Bell Systems.
(8)When a telephone handset is hung up or on the hook, about 50 Volts of DC current run thru the line. Once the handset is picked up and is "off the hook" the voltage drops down to about 5 Volts DC.

It all started on a cold October night--I was cold and awake so I went out walking. While I was out, I decided to check out the rumor of a Bell sewer nearby. Well--the rumor happened to be true, and as far as I could tell the sewer was uninhabited, so I ran back home and got my dad's crowbar and pried up the cover which made a loud grating sound as the iron brushed the cold asphault. So I lowered myself down carefully shining my light to scare away any vagabonds or rats. There were none. (I guess Bell did a good job of cleaning up for me--too bad there was no room service...) Anyway--I hunkered down with my tool box (ill show a pic n the next issue) so I opened the box and plugged in. From here I called the all night pizza place, and told them that I wanted a large cheese pizza delivered to me (they had my name on file--ain't CID great?) So having done this, I hit a different pair and dialed an ANI. I recorded this number and called it on the pair I had called the pizza place from. or this I threewayed to the crisis connection for youth or whatever--and I sat back with the mute button on and listened to the fireworks as both parties accused eachother of something. by this time it was around 130 am, so I figured Id better rap things up--I called misc friedns in other countries (sory Jambo--no number =]) and decided to spend the night. So I set the alarm on my watch for 4 am (i didnt sleep much...) and fell into a fitful sleep. I awoke not to the sound of my watch chirping away at me, but to the sound of a car and the smell of exhaust--at first I had no idea why I was in a manhole (or even that this was a manhole!) Gradually I regained my senses and looked at my watch--it was around three and I realized I couldnt stay here forever cause itd be light and the poeple in ma 'hood dont know what to make of me when Im in terminal boxes--let alone crawling dreay eyed out of a sewer! So I made for home, and thus ended "my night in a bell sewer"... pretty exciting? Just wait till next issue "Alone in the school's crawlspace with nothing but a janitor's set of keys and a lineman's handset"
Now I dont know if these are the orginal plans for this box, but this is how to make a simple telephone eavesdropper indicator. This device will allow you to monitor the drops of voltage in your line thus alerting you via a LED ifsomeone is tapping you. Now this works because most of the time unless the tapee has a good wire tapping device, whenever another device is connected to a line it will naturally draw its power. Something to note: Nowadays the tapping of phones is done at the BellCo and not done as a hard wire tap.

A CN/A is a section of AT&T kept up to supply it's offices' with Names and addresses of people who own a certain number. CN/A stands for: Customer's name and address. Of course, they have to call seperate numbers to find out this info so, it is possible for phreakers to find out this info too. Example conversation:
Caller: Hi I'm Jim Dennis from the resedential center in Miami. I need the number for a customer and the address would be helpful.
Operator: Of course, Jim. What is the number?
Caller: It is 237-5601.
Operator: Is that in the 504 area code?
Caller: Yes, it is.

it was a dark and gloomy night. the wind was howling, and the cops were swarming as thick as, well... as thick as cops at a donut shop. on this particular night the boronda crew decided that there were better things to do than just brawl and watch tv all night long. so we packed up our handy beige box, a couple of line splitters, and phones for all, and lit off for our local big green telco box. i went to hooked up the beige box but to no avail, i could not seem to find a live set of wires while holding the flashlight at the same time. simon had to come out and find a good connection to hook our box to so that we could run the cable off behind the fence of a reststrant/resort/good place to fuck with. it was tough with cars driving by so often, you would find a good one but a car would drive by and you would have to bail and drop every thing and try to find which one you were working off of. but finally we got one to work, closed the doors an ran the cable, we were set. with the door of the box closed we didn't have to worrie about any of those swarming cops wondering why some kids dressed in army camo had their heads buried inside ma bell's box.
we had decided that this night would be phone social engineering `sex night`. someone had come up with the 'pink pages' which contained many useful numbers for us to practice your skills upon. our first social engineering test was a 24 hour donut shop in oregon (we had to warm up before we went big time, talking to phone sluts.) remi edwardo used to live down the street from the shop before he moved back to become a boronda crew kid once again. remi knew the owners and thought giving them a call and complaining about all the holes in their donuts would be a good use of the wonderful phone line that someone donated to our cause that night. once we were warmed up we moved on to bigger and better things(i guess.)
